Veterinary dentist, Dr Gerhard Steenkamp, working on two root canals and an extraction on Junior, one of more than 30 lions rescued by ADI and flown from Peru to a new life in South Africa at Emoya Big Cat Sanctuary.

Junior suffered an enormous amount of damage to his teeth during his time with the circus. Dr Peter Emily and his team from The Peter Emily International Veterinary Dental Foundation (PEIVDF) performed surgery on Junior at the ADI Spirit of Freedom Rescue Center in Peru, to give him relief before the lions came home to Africa, but Junior will need several operations.

Lions endure horrific injuries to their teeth in circuses due to being hit in the face with metal bars and biting the bars of their cages in desperation. Several of the lions rescued by ADI had every canine tooth broken in the circus.

Help us continue to rebuild the lives of the lions we rescued from circuses in Peru and Colombia.
